cookiescream

Ingredients:

mini chocolate cookies, roasted hazels, white chocolate buttons and sunflower seeds

I received this snack in my January Graze Box.

Tea Suggestion:

This was a yummy tea time snack with a cup of single estate black tea like this Lovers Leap Estate Indigo from Eden Grove.  The tea is a flavorful Ceylon and the rich flavor complemented the tasty Cookies & Cream concept of this snack.

What I Think:

This is a tasty “trail mix” like snack that is different from any trail mix that I’ve ever tasted.

First, you have tiny little crunchy chocolate cookies that are quite yummy on their own, but also tasty when you eat them with any of the other ingredients too.  They’re crunchy and sweet, but not too dense or hard.  Quite delightful to pop in the mouth and eat … a box of these would be gone in short time, so it’s a good thing that I have a limited quantity in front of me.

Then there are nickle-sized discs of white chocolate.  Creamy and yummy.  White chocolate is not my favorite way to eat chocolate, but, I like these little discs and they add a tasty “creamy” element to the cookies & cream idea behind this snack.

There are lots of sunflower kernels to this snack and that’s quite alright with me.  I don’t know that I’ve ever eaten a cookie with sunflower seed kernels in them … but, I like the crunchy, nutty sweetness that these seeds bring to the “party.”

There are even a few hazelnuts, and these are a nice addition too.  Crunchy and delicious, I love to eat one and then pop one of the cookies in my mouth, it’s a tasty flavor combination.

Neither the hazelnuts nor the sunflower kernels were particularly salty, and I found myself wishing that there was a bit more salt factor to this sweet snack because I love the combination of salty and sweet.

My Final Thoughts:

I “liked” this one.   It’s not my favorite snack from Graze, but, I enjoyed it enough to want to have it again on occasion.

What I Think:

I happened upon this bottle of soda while dining in a Portland restaurant.  I had never heard of hazelnut soda before, and I was definitely intrigued!  I love hazelnuts, and while I’m not a big fan of soda pop (I much prefer tea!), I will occasionally indulge in a soda now and then, usually when I find something interesting and unique like this Hazelnut Cream Soda!

And it certainly is unique, although there is something quite familiar about it too.  It has a base flavor of vanilla cream soda – a really rich, delicious vanilla cream soda with an emphasis on the VANILLA!  Very sweet, very creamy, and tastes a bit like a ice cream soda … imagine having an ice cream soda with a big scoop of real vanilla ice cream that has melted in the soda … that’s what this tastes like!  Yummy vanilla goodness.

But let’s not forget about the hazelnut, because that’s in there too!  The hazelnut melds beautifully with the vanilla tones, to create a sweet and nutty, slightly toasty flavor that perfectly complements the flavor of the vanilla.

My Final Thoughts:

This is really, really good.  I mean, I was fairly confident that I’d enjoy this, but, I didn’t realize what a treat I was in for with this soda.   As I’ve said many times before, I’m not a big soda enthusiast, but, if I found this while shopping I might pick up a bottle for one of those special times when I want something sweet and fizzy.

Product Information:

most popular, loaded with bittersweet chocolate chips and roasted hazelnuts, best for coffee, steamed milk with honey and hot chocolate

Tea Suggestion:

Well, despite the “best with” recommendation in the product description above, I did not eat these with coffee, or steamed milk, or hot chocolate.  Instead, I brewed a cup of this incredibly rich, delicious Golden Monkey Superior from Teas Etc.  The sweetness of the tea was enhanced further with the deliciously nutty hazelnut flavor of this biscotti, and the savory bitter as well as the sweet of the chocolate emerged strongly.  Delightful!

What I Think:

I mentioned in my last Gilda’s Biscotti review (Almond Anise Biscotti) that those were my favorite, and they still are.  But, these are nearing in at a very close second.  And for those who don’t care for anise (it is somewhat of an acquired taste), these Chocolate Hazelnut Biscotti I think, would be more to their liking.

Like the other two biscotti varieties I’ve tried from Gilda’s Biscotti, these are deliciously crunchy and sweet, but I like that they aren’t too sweet.  They are somewhere between a biscuit and a cookie as far as sweetness goes – less sweet than a cookie, but a little more sweet than most biscuits.

These also have big chunks of hazelnut baked in them, but I don’t think that is where most of the hazelnut flavor is coming from.  I think they also have a hazelnut flavoring in them, because the hazelnut flavor has infiltrated every morsel of these biscotti.  The hazelnut is a strong flavor – very prominent in every bite.  Yum!

I find at least 1 chocolate chip in each biscotti, and that seems to be the only real chocolate flavor here.  Normally, the chocoholic in me would balk at the lack of chocolate, however, the hazelnut is so delicious that I find it difficult to complain about the lack of chocolate.

My Final Thoughts:

I really enjoyed these… and the more I eat them, the tastier they are … which makes it quite difficult to stop!

Hearty and healthy, these double nut pancakes are loaded with protein. No more starchy pancakes!

What I Think:

For the purposes of this review, I prepared a pancake according to the recipe (it’s really easy, just add an egg and milk), and ate it topped with just butter so that I could experience the pancake before adding additional toppings such as syrup, peanut butter or jam.

The pancakes fry up very fluffy and thick, but they are much heartier than a typical pancake because there are bits of chopped hazelnuts in the mix.  In addition to providing a heartier texture, they add a very pleasant crunch and a pleasant earthiness and sweetness to the pancake.  I also like that the pancake doesn’t taste overly sweet, allowing the natural sweetness of the hazelnut to shine through.

One cup of mix makes about 6 pancakes, and they are very substantial and hunger-satisfying, much more so than the typical buttermilk pancake.  Very good topped with maple or berry flavored syrup, but I like them best with my chai syrup that I make using brown sugar and a strong infusion of masala chai spices.

My Final Thoughts:

I love that this is a local product, and I especially love how delicious the pancakes are.  You can also make delicious, nutty waffles with this mix.  This mix can help you make an ordinary pancake breakfast something special!

Where to Buy:  Justin’s Online and select stores

Price:  $9.95 for a 16-ounce jar

Product Description:

Quick Question:  Do you eat cake frosting for breakfast?  I didn’t think so.  Neither do I.  Yet some chocolate hazelnut butters have more sugar than cake frosting.  You can check.  I’ll wait … see.  So this is a warning that my chocolate hazelnut butter may not taste like what you’re used to; sugar.  What it will taste like is a delicious combination of the premium hazelnuts and homemade chocolate for an addictive, skip the bread and eat with a spoon delicacy.

What I Think:

When I received this packet in my Foodzie Tasting Box for August along with the other Justin’s nut butters, I figured it would taste like Nutella.  I usually keep Nutella on hand, so I held off on tasting this Chocolate Hazelnut Butter because I didn’t really figure it would be anything all that different.

And you know what… this is very similar to Nutella.  Except … I can taste the hazelnuts.  I mean… really taste the hazelnuts!  As with my other experiences with Justin’s nut butters, this has a slightly different kind of consistency and texture – it tastes homemade.  It doesn’t taste like it was made in a factory.  So every once in a while, I can feel the texture of a bit of finely ground nut that wasn’t ground quite as finely as the other particles.

This is smooth and creamy, nutty and oh-so-chocolate-y!  This just simply tastes better than Nutella.  It is sweet… but like the above description states, this doesn’t taste like sugar.  And I think that is what my fascination for Nutella was about – it was the sugar.  It does taste like cake frosting.  This … doesn’t.  It is sweet, but this tastes like chocolate and hazelnuts.  And even though I love cake frosting … I like this better.

My Final Thoughts:

Well, I am going to finish my last jar of Nutella because I don’t like the idea of wasting it.  But, when it comes time to get a new jar, I think I’m going to reach for THIS instead.

Product Description:

Crunchy, crispy, salty, and sweet, the ‘Bert bar has a satisfying crunch and comforting flavors. A filling of milk chocolate, filberts, crispy rice, honey, and peanut butter combines with dark chocolate to make an addicting treat.

What I Think:

If anyone’s been keeping track, you’ll know that all that I have left from my March Tasting Box is chocolate and tea.  My two favorite food groups!

The Foodzie homepage shows that the Honey Bar was to be in the tasting box, but that’s OK… the ‘Bert Bar seems more like the candy bar I would have selected for myself.  I love the contrast between salty and sweet!  I also love that this company is local!

I am actually finding it difficult to chat about this candy bar, because it tastes so good that I just want to eat.   But I shall try my best!

Unwrapped, the candy bar looks very much like a candy bar you might buy from the corner convenience store.  But that is where the similarity ends.  Let’s start with the wrapper which is in itself pretty unique as it is made of biodegradable cellophane.

The aroma is chocolate-y and nutty.  And when I bite into the bar – candy bar bliss!  The chocolate is smooth and sweet with a hint of bitterness to it.  Because the dark chocolate shell is rather thin in comparison to the filling, it is difficult to tell of its quality when eaten with the rest of the bar.  But I took a little sliver off of the bar to see if I could get a “snap” from the chocolate.  Yep… it’s there.  This is the good stuff!

Inside the dark chocolate coating is a filling that looks like milk chocolate ganache with chopped nuts.  It’s a very dense-looking filling, but, possesses a very light texture.  Very smooth and creamy.  You might think that the milk chocolate and peanut butter would create a very thick, stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth kind of texture, but, this is very light – probably because of the addition of crisped rice which also adds a nice crispiness to the bar.

The nutty flavor from the filberts and peanut butter is better than any peanut butter cup I’ve ever tasted.  This tastes fresh and not overly processed.  It just tastes smooth, rich and creamy with a nice crunch from the filberts.

This is an absolutely delicious candy bar.  I just finished the bar and am thinking about ordering more right now because I know I am going to want another very soon.  Totally YUM!

My Final Thoughts:

I am not going to go so far as to say that this is my favorite candy bar or the best candy bar I’ve ever tried because whatever chocolate I happen to have in front of me tends to be my favorite.  (yeah, I’m a chocoholic, remember?)  But I will say that this candy bar is an explosion of flavor.  Warning:  This candy bar can become addictive!

Where to Buy:  La Châtelaine Chocolat on Foodzie

Product Description:

Peer inside any charming French chocolaterie and you will find Mendiants for sale. These quintessentially French confections are small discs of dark chocolate adorned with candied fruits and nuts enlived with a sprinkling of Camargue Fleur de Sel. Nibble one for Goûter.

What I think:

Well, here it is the last day of February, and I’ve saved the chocolate Mendiants from my February Tasting Box for last.  Hey, what can I say, I’m a chocoholic, and I KNEW I would love these.  No doubt in my mind whatsoever.

And I do love these Mendiants.  They are absolutely delightful.  Tucked inside a clear cellophane bag (tied up with a brown ribbon that’s been printed with the name of  La Châtelaine Chocolat Co.) are two of these beautifully adorned discs of dark chocolate.  Each one has been topped with a hazelnut, two pumpkin seed kernels, a pistachio nut, and a candied orange rind, as well as a generous sprinkling of Fleur de Sel.

The sweet chocolate snaps crisply – a good sign!  The salt offers fantastic contrast to the bittersweet dark chocolate.  The flavor of the pumpkin seed kernel is not very noticeable when eaten with the chocolate, but it does provide an interesting texture to the bite.  The pistachio nut is delightful – nutty, sweet, and toasty!

The hazelnut is also very nice and in the bite that included the hazelnut, I found that the flavor of the nut dominated over the taste of salt and chocolate.  The candied orange peel has a slightly drunken taste to it.  The peel adds a great chewy texture to the bite, as well as a sweet, tangy taste, and is probably my favorite topping on the Mendiant.

My final thoughts:

YUM!  These delicious discs could easily become a favorite chocolate treat.
